What To Do In Case Of Emergency
When there is no electricity
|
| The disruptions of the power supply can be caused by the number of factors including: strong winds, ice and heave snow as well as the installation damage. The power supply is usually restored in the short period of time. However, more serious lacks of the power supply may sometimes take place. When there is no electric power you should: |
|
|
-
Make sure that your neighbours have the electricity. It is possible that only your house experience the lack of electric power, for example due to a short circuit or to the fuse failure. If your neighbours have the same problem, you should call the local power station. If you are forced to go outside, in order to check out the situation be sure to take a flash light with you and to look around whether there are some broken electric wires in the area. When you will find it, don’t come near it, don’t touch anything which is lying next to the wires. Call the proper authorities immediately.
-
Use the flash lights for illumination purposes. When there is a fire alert we don’t advise you to use any type of candles or paraffin lamps.
-
Turn off all the electric devices in the house. In case when most of them ( refrigerators, warmers and boilers, fens and pumps) remains switched on it could cause the circuit overload, which could also lead to lack of power supply.
-
Refrigerators and freezers should remain locked as long as possible. The food may still be stored, for a day or two, when the doors are closed. You should try eating the products which tend to spoil easily. If there are any doubts just throw it away.
-
Be careful while using the portable power generators. They can only be used to deliver a limited amount of electric power in the time of its shortage. Do not switch on the portable equipment neither in the house nor in the garage, because the gas equipment may cause serious fire or the poisoning with carbon monoxide. The generators should be placed according to the local power station’s instructions. You should always follow the recommendations of the product manager. Call your power station for any additional information regarding the proper use of the electrical equipment.
|
-
If you are using water from the container or the well you should be ready to use other sources of water supplies until the restoration of the electric power. In the above mentioned containers the electrical pumps are used, which are going to be cut off together with the power supply.
-
You should realise that the gas equipment may not work without electricity, because this type of power is used to start on the fuse.
-
Dry out the pumps, installation, warmers and boilers, sinks, washing machines and dishwashers. The cold water installation may freeze when the power is out. In order to avoid the serious flows due to a temperature rising, you should close down the valves. The warmers and the dry boilers also have to be switched off in order to avoid a possible freezing. If you choose to ignore the above mentioned instructions it may cause the damage to the heating elements when you will try to turn them on again. Don’t ever switch on any type of heating water equipment if the tank that is not completely filled.
-
Make a list of electric power equipment, which is used for live support of your family members (respirators, oxygen supply and the other live support equipment). You should always have a plan which would include other sources of power supply where the evacuation of people is concerned.
